The holiday season is a time of joy, warmth, and celebration. As the years go by, the way we decorate our homes for the holidays evolves. With 45 years of experience in the industry, we have seen trends come and go, but some styles have a lasting impact. In this blog post, we will explore the best holiday decor trends that are shaping the way we celebrate. From classic themes to modern twists, there is something for everyone.
Select A Theme
What is the message you want to share? Many people like to drive around neighborhoods looking at beautiiful lights, but keep in mind what is being celebrated. Due to the fact that Christmas is the celebration of the incarnation of God coming to us as human (Jesus Christ), it is important to keep that as the focal point.
This can be accomplished via a nativity scene, church scene, festive scene, etc. Once you have decided on the theme/message, we can proceed to the way you want to present the scene to carry out the message.
Scene Design
Some people;e are very crafty and like to construct their own elements of what will be displayed. This allows for a personal, customized creation that is precise to a vision. Other individuals like to use store-purchased items that are ready-to-go out of the box. This saves work and time, which can be very beneficial. Decide which way will work best for you, then we'll move on to how we go about each method.
DIY
Creating your own outdoor lights display is as vast as your vision can see. i personally use plywood to build the elements of my displays (the thinner the wood, the easier to mount/support; the thicker the wood, the more durable it is but stronger support is required).
I draw images on a letter size sheet of paper, then copy to a transparency. The transparency is then placed on an overhead projector and transferred to the plywood, whatever size I desire. You're simply tracing (redrawinf teh image) as you see it on teh. plywood.
Next, I use a jigsaw to cut out the drawn piece from teh wood. I use 1"x2" wood strips to brace the piece, the paint it with water-based paint and brushes.
Note: You may opt to illuminate your piece with a floodlight, or you may choose to illuminate with LED lights inserted into holes that you. would drill on the piece. This is very effecgiv e, as it allows you to use colored LED lights to corrospond to the your piece. It's then ready to place in the area intended in your display.
Minimalist Aesthetics
On the other end of the spectrum, minimalism is also trending this holiday season. Many people are opting for a more streamlined approach to their decor. This style focuses on simplicity and elegance.
Simple Decorations
Instead of elaborate displays, consider using simple decorations. A few well-placed candles, a small tree, or a single wreath can create a beautiful and calming environment. This minimalist approach is perfect for those who prefer a less cluttered space. The saying "Less is more" has truth to it in a lot of cases.
Classic Ornaments
Vintage ornaments are making a comeback. These pieces often have unique shapes and colors that add character to your tree. Consider visiting thrift stores or antique shops to find one-of-a-kind decorations that tell a story.
Also in this category would be the store-bought blow molds. There are snowmen, Santas, angels, etc. available. You can create quite an elaborate display if you use enough of these, and in an organized way that looks clean. These illuminate from within the plastic 3-dimensional pieces and are light weight, making for simplistic securing/mounting.
Technology in Holiday Decor
Technology is also playing a role in holiday decor trends. From smart lights to digital displays, there are many ways to incorporate technology into your celebrations.
Smart Lighting
Smart lighting systems allow you to customize your holiday lighting with ease. You can change colors, set timers, and even sync your lights to music. This technology adds a modern twist to traditional decor and can create a magical atmosphere.
